Outlander Filming Locations in Fife – Culross, Falkland and Beyond

Outlander filming locations in Fife - Culross and Falkland villages in Scotland

Outlander filming locations in Fife are some of the most recognisable in the entire series. If you have watched even a single episode, chances are you have already seen Fife on screen without realising it. From the cobbled streets of Culross standing in for the fictional village of Cranesmuir to Falkland doubling as 1940s Inverness, this corner of Scotland played a starring role from the very first season.

Whether you are a dedicated Outlander fan or simply looking for a reason to explore Fife beyond the usual tourist trail, these filming locations offer a brilliant mix of history, scenery and that unmistakable atmosphere the show captured so well.

Culross – The Real Cranesmuir

Culross is arguably the most iconic Outlander filming location in Fife. This beautifully preserved 16th and 17th-century village was used as the fictional village of Cranesmuir in Season 1. Walk down the cobbled Back Causeway and you will immediately recognise the spot where Jamie witnesses a young boy with his ear nailed to a pillory.

Culross Palace, managed by the National Trust for Scotland, doubled as the home of Geillis Duncan. The ochre-coloured building with its distinctive painted ceilings and terraced garden is worth visiting in its own right. The Mercat Cross, the Town House with its clock tower, and the narrow wynds between the houses all featured in the show.

Beyond Outlander, Culross has a rich history as a former trading port dealing in coal and salt. The ruins of Culross Abbey, founded in the 13th century, sit on the hill above the village and offer views across the Firth of Forth. It is a genuine step back in time, and the village atmosphere has barely changed since filming wrapped.

Falkland – Standing in for 1940s Inverness

Falkland, nestled at the foot of the Lomond Hills, was transformed into 1940s Inverness for the opening scenes of Outlander. This is where Claire and Frank Randall arrive for their second honeymoon, checking into Mrs Baird’s Bed and Breakfast. That B&B is actually the Covenanter Hotel on the village square, and fans still visit to photograph the now-famous facade.

The village square itself was dressed to look like post-war Inverness, complete with period shop fronts. Claire’s window-shopping scene was filmed here, and the Bruce Fountain in the centre of the square is instantly recognisable. In Season 2, Falkland Palace itself was also used as a filming location, adding royal grandeur to the production.

Falkland Palace, built in the 15th and 16th centuries, was the country residence of the Stuart monarchs. The palace gardens and the original royal tennis court are open to visitors and well worth an afternoon, whether you are an Outlander fan or not.

Beyond Culross and Falkland – Other Fife Connections

While Culross and Falkland are the headline locations, Fife’s wider landscape and coastal villages share the same character that attracted the Outlander production team. The East Neuk fishing villages of Anstruther, Crail and Pittenweem have a similar timeless quality, even if they did not feature directly in the show. If you enjoyed the atmosphere of Cranesmuir on screen, you will find that same feeling walking through these real Fife villages.

Dunfermline Abbey and the historic streets of St Andrews also connect to the broader Scottish history that runs through Outlander’s storyline. Fife is compact enough that you can visit multiple locations in a single day without spending hours in the car.

Take a Guided Outlander Tour from Edinburgh

If you would rather have someone else handle the driving and the history, there are excellent guided tours that cover the key Outlander filming locations in Fife and beyond. These typically depart from Edinburgh and visit Culross, Falkland Palace and other iconic spots from the series.

The Outlander and Castles Film Locations Day Tour from Edinburgh is a popular small-group option that takes in Blackness Castle, Culross and other key sites. For a more personalised experience, the Outlander Private Tour from Edinburgh visits Midhope Castle, Falkland Palace and Culross on a flexible itinerary.

You can also combine Outlander locations with a broader Fife day out. The St Andrews and the Fishing Villages of Fife day tour covers the East Neuk coast and St Andrews, giving you a full picture of what makes this part of Scotland so special.

Planning Your Visit

Culross and Falkland are both easy to reach from Kirkcaldy. Culross is about 30 minutes west by car, while Falkland is roughly 20 minutes north. There is limited public transport to Culross, so driving or joining a tour is the most practical option. Falkland is slightly better connected, with local bus services running from Glenrothes.

Spring and summer are the best times to visit, as Culross Palace and gardens have seasonal opening hours through the National Trust for Scotland. Falkland Palace is also seasonal, so check ahead before making the trip. Both villages are small enough to explore on foot in a couple of hours, but you will want to allow extra time to soak in the atmosphere.
